Koreans

Those who fall under any of the following categories requires a special attention.
  • Residence Passport Holder
  • Those with military duties or active duty soldiers
  • Those with dual nationality
  • First-time immigrants and foreign adoptee
  • Those listed as accompanied children on passport
  • Departing vessel crew
Residence Passport Holder
  • Residency passport holders have the following restriction on how long they can stay in Korea. Upon the end of the allowed term, the passport will automatically be rendered invalid and those wishing to depart must get one re-issued at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

    ※ Overseas Koreans who was re-issued a passport in Korea must obtain the "Certification of Entry Records" prior to departing.
  • In following cases, the passport will remain valid even after the period defined above. However, "Confirmation of visa extension" must be acquired from the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade prior to departure
    • Those who live in Korea for over two years at the request of related administrative agency's chief (and their dependant family members)
    • Those who lived overseas for over 3 years and invested more than 100,000 dollars to domestic business/organization (and their dependant family members)
    • Executive officers or staff of a domestic branch office of a foreign business/company who received payment that year (and their dependant family members)
    • Spouses or adopted children of foreigners that stay in Korea for over 2 years (Including soldiers)
    • Overseas Koreans who have lived overseas for over 3 years, and are studying in Korea (Not applicable to foreign schools)
    • Seniors over 60 years of age
    • Those who are acknowledged as having acceptable reason by the minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (The reason must apply prior to expiration of entry date)
Those with Military Duties / Active duty Soldiers
Those with Military Duties
  • Korean Males between the ages 18 and 35 (Marked with "Restriction of Altercation" seal on the passport).
  • If Entry & Departure Declaration Office of Military Manpower Administration is available (Inchon Airport, Gimhae, Jeju, Busan, Inchon, etc) : Must receive seal of declaration on the passport and departure card before departing.
  • If Entry & Departure Declaration Office is unavailable: Must make a certificate of departure and present it to the Immigration Office before departing.
Active duty Soldiers
  • Soldiers with mandatory military declaration duties (between ages 18 and 35) : Must be examined by the Republic of Korea Defense Security Command
  • Soldiers without military declaration duties (Commissioned / Non-commissioned officers over 35 years of age): Must have Overseas Travel Permission or Leave Order examined before departing
A Person with Dual Nationality
Departure procedure for those who entered with a foreign passport and later received "As-Korean National" status
  • By default, one must depart with the Korean passport
  • If departing with the foreign passport, the fact must be notified upon departure
  • Overseas travel of those with military duties who have not yet served in the military will be restricted
Departure procedure for those born in Korea with dual nationality
  • If departing with a Korean passport, then he/she will be treated as a Korean national.
  • If departing with a foreign passport, then he/she will be treated as a foreigner. However, if he/she is older than 30 days and is not assigned any stay status, then the departure must be notified ahead of time.
  • It is possible to depart without any visa when traveling to the country that issued the passport he/she held prior to obtaining "As-Korean National" treatment.
First-time Immigrants & Foreign Adoptee
  • First-time immigrants & & foreign adoptee must write "First-time immigrants" for [travel purpose], the name of the country he/she is immigrating to for [destination], and the address listed on the national registration card for [address] when filling out the departure card.
Accompanied Children
  • Accompanying children under 8 is no longer permitted, and it is thusly strongly recommended that children be given their individual passports. Be advised that having accompanied children listed on the passport complicates inspection process, and those children will not be able to leave the country unless accompanied by the person whose passport listed them as accompanied children.
    Departing Vessel Crew
    • Those with a sailor's identification certificate must obtain confirmation of sailor's departure from the officer of Regional Office of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries prior to departing. (Seaman Act Enforcement Regulation Article 29)
    • The seal of the confirmation of seaman's departure is valid for ten days only.
