Candidates (Nationality Act Article 9 Section 1)
  1. Foreigners that had Korean nationality in the past
  2. Those that lost Korean nationality through reasons stated to Nationality Act (A Korean Foreigner)
  3. Those that renounced their nationality as a person with dual nationality
  4. Foreigners that acquired Korean nationality under the permission of Nationalship or married a Korean national before June 14, 1998, but the forfeited Korean nationality due to the fact that did not give up their original nationality within 6 months of acquiring Korean nationality, and have held onto that original nationality for more than a year after forfeiting Korean nationality.
  • If the domestic family registry is still intact at the time of reinstatement.

Restriction concerning Permission of Reinstatement of Nationality (Nationality Act. Article 9, Section 2)
  • - In the following cases, reinstatement of nationality is not permitted.
  • Those that harms Korean society or Korea itself.
  • Those with poor conduct
  • Those that loses or renounces Korean nationality for the purpose of evasion of military service
  • Those that the Minister of Justice restricts reinstatement of nationality for the sake of national security and public order.

  • A Copy of Passport (3 copies if Chinese Passport)
  • Family Registry or Verifying Document to prove the applicant was a Korean national (or had previously acquired Korean nationality) Other equivalent verifiable document
  • Document verifying reason and date of acquiring foreign nationality or losing nationality
    - Ex: Permission of Naturalization. A Copy of Nationalship Certificate, Passport, Family Registry whose Twain or Japan nationals
  • A Resident Registration
  • If the child is accompanied, A Copy of Child's Passport & Verifying Document that the child's parent is a real father or mother (Birth Certificate).
  • Proving documents of parents, spouse, children, marriage status or adoption of person who applied for restore nationality
  • In case that the person who applied for restore nationality specifies the date of birth newly, a certificate proving this fact issued by Embassy or consulate's office of their original country.
